Antique Turkish Konya Obruk Kilim

Material: Handwoven wool on wool foundation
Origin: Konya, Central Anatolia, Turkey
Age: Mid-20th Century

This striking Turkish Konya Obruk kilim is a beautiful example of Anatolian flatweave artistry. Handwoven in the Obruk region of Konya, Central Anatolia, it features bold tribal symbolism and vibrant natural dyes, all executed with a strong sense of geometric clarity.

The central field showcases a deep red prayer niche (mihrab) design—a common motif in Anatolian kilims, symbolizing spiritual intention and direction. Flanked by abstract ram’s horn motifs and amulet-like forms, the layout combines protection symbols with ancestral meaning. The use of a stepped outline in ivory highlights the niche shape, giving the piece a sense of depth and visual rhythm.

Surrounding the field is a dynamic border of multi-colored diamonds and hooked motifs, rendered in rich reds, blues, ivory, and soft greens. The precision of the flatweave technique is evident in the sharpness of the forms and the harmony of the composition.

Woven with hand-spun wool and dyed using natural pigments, this kilim reflects the deep-rooted nomadic traditions of its makers. Its small size and cultural richness make it ideal for wall display, layering, or as an accent in eclectic interiors.
